Current members

Maxwell Jackson is a PhD student working on North Atlantic atmosphere–ocean interactions and their role in seasonal forecasts, co-supervised by Matt Patterson and Jean Reinaud.

Freya Gibbon is a PhD student working on the jet stream response to changing temperature gradients and its impact on the ocean. Freya’s lead supervisor is Graeme MacGilchrist and she is also co-supervised by Mike Byrne.

Thomas Breitburd is PhD student working on understanding compound extreme events with machine learning. Thomas’s lead supervisor is Ioana Colfescu and he is also co-supervised by Jean Reinaud and Chen Lu.

Angel Brear is a StARIS undergraduate researcher for summer 2026 working on analysing data from a new sonic anemometer in the St Andrews Botanic Garden.

Past members

Shih-Ni Zhou was a visiting research student from National Taiwan University in June 2025, supported by our joint seed funding project with NTU. Shih-Ni worked on understanding the surface response to SSWs and predicting it using machine learning.
